Come See!

It is AMAZING how many sightseeing attractions all huddle together in the privileged little land of Berchtesgaden! From mountaintops, where the Eagle's Nest perches, to deep below the ground where visitors can explore WWII bunkers or the magic realm of the enchanting salt mines, a host of exciting, historic or just simply beautiful sites are here for the choosing…

Berchtesgaden

Berchtesgaden

Originally, the town of Berchtesgaden was the seat of a small principality. Its rulers built a castle and enjoyed the seclusion and hunting opportunities of St. Bartholomew peninsula on Lake Königssee.

Salt was a major source of income for the township of Berchtesgaden. The same applies to the neighboring community of Bad Reichenhall, which still has salt works

in operation. Though rivalry over the mining and trading of salt arose with the town of Salzburg, Berchtesgaden's rulers knew how to enjoy life with a glass of their local Schnapps, distilled from the roots of the gentian plant.

Traditions and handicrafts are a way of life here. To find out more about them, a visit to the local heritage museum is an entertaining and educational experience. There has been a recent addition to the Berchtesgadener Land's attractions, an interesting collection of locomotives and railway artifacts in Freilassing.

So "come see" what this little corner of Bavaria has to offer!
