From the din of shooters heralding the arrival of Jesus to classical music concerts of the regional philharmonic orchestra, from oompa bands playing at local beer fests to fine dining experiences accompanied by harp and zither, from the elegance of an evening at the gambling casino to rowdy dances performed by youngsters in lederhosen and dirndl at Bavarian evenings, the Berchtesgadener Land is a place for great entertainment and pure enjoyment.

Giant pretzels, Schweinshaxe and a 'Mass' (1 liter) of beer are part of the fun at many of the traditional events that take place in the Berchtesgaden area. There is evidence of the Berchtesgaden area having been inhabited as far back as the 8th century. In those times of early Germanic civilization, pagan rites, superstition and protective rituals were an integral part of everyday life.

Particularly in mountainous regions, cut off from the change and progress achieved in the cultural hubs of Europe, these traditions were carried on religiously, despite the strong influence of the Catholic Church. Pagan rites were coupled with Christian holidays in order to allow the people to perpetuate the beliefs of their forefathers and, at the same time, satisfy the clergy by 'sanctifying' their once-heathen practices.

Throughout the year you are cordially invited to "come enjoy" the locals' heartfelt celebration of the gift of life in a hidden corner of Germany that you are sure to discover as… 'paradise on earth'.
