Whitsun
At 4:00 in the morning on Whitsunday (Pentecost Sunday), the local shooting clubs use their traditional muzzle-loaders (Handböller) to shoot in honor of the Holy Ghost.
In the Berchtesgadener Land it is believed that at this exact moment the Pope blessed the whole world. It is possible that in former times, the prince-provost of Berchtesgaden had the right to transmit a papal blessing at Whitsuntide.
miners' parade
On Whitmonday (Pentecost Monday), the Berchtesgaden salt miners host their annual celebration. Mass is held in the mines to bless any new working area, after which the miners, dressed in their ceremonial uniforms (blue and white, traditional colors of Bavaria), stage a sonorous and colorful parade through the streets of Berchtesgaden.
